The “Occupy” movement, which started in New York towards the end of 2011, has spread around the world and taken root in many states and countries. Simply keeping this movement going over the northern winter has been a huge achievement. Now spring approaches. What can the movement achieve in 2012?
Occupy is first and foremost a movement for economic justice, yet the remedies are not obvious or universally agreed. Defining a clear, coherent set of economic demands is not easy.
However, there's an absolute imperative this year to stop the stampede to yet more evil and unnecessary wars – wars that could, in the worst case, end civilisation as we know it and cause human death on an utterly unprecedented scale.
Plutocrats responsible for bleeding humanity dry are behind these wars. Defeating their push to demolish all remaining source of resistance to their imperialist policies is crucial to overcoming their broader agenda. In any case, peace is its own reward. For the masses , no real economic progress can be made if the 'dogs of war' run free.
The Occupy movement has a chance to make a crucial contribution to the survival and well-being of humanity, by coalescing as a worldwide movement to oppose militarism and war. Demonstrations around the world should become permanent until the warmongers call off their attempt to pitch the planet into yet more catastrophic wars – wars likely to benefit no-one in the long-term.
The USA now boasts the most bloated military machine in the history of the world, with many hundreds of military bases situated in over half the nations on earth. It can only maintain this imperial structure by fleecing the American people and distorting the global economy.
Defeating the war machine is the most direct way to free up the resources needed to trigger global economic recovery and the rebuilding of our economy so it is genuinely sustainable and serve real human needs.
In 2012, let's Occupy Planet Earth for Peace!

Occupy Sydney respond to Faux News, NSW police beatup

1% er Rupert Murdochs Daily Telegraph again illustrates News Ltd / News Corps appalling lack of journalistic integrity with this http://m.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/sydney-nsw/shops-pressure-police-to-evict-occupy-sydney-protesters-from-cbd/story-e6freuzi-1226271239083 uncorroborated regurgitation of what police have told them. As with many stories told as news by Fox / News this piece belongs in the Disney library, or perhaps in some journalism course as an example of bad journalism.
As is dangerously true of many of Australias narrowly held mainstream media outlets, the author has thrown the journalistic requisite of corroboration out the window preferring to simply regurgitate the police assertion.
On January 10th the District Court famously dismissed (on the basis of "no case to answer" ) a charge of illegally camping & staying overnight against an occupy sydney participant. Police assertions were not upheld - because they got the law wrong. IT IS NOT APPROPRIATE TO TAKE THE WORD OF POLICE OR THE SPIN FROM THE POLICE MEDIA UNIT AS TRUTH.
The Telegraph writer did not seek a response from Occupy Sydney participants. Nor is there a single statement from local shop who are reportedly inundating police with complaints.

So again the Murdoch mainstream media act as the State lapdog, supporting politically motivated policing with the usual cocktail of lies halftruths and innuendoes...

HEADS UP EVERYONE! DON'T FORGET TO SHARE THIS MESSAGE:

In the light and expansion of the recent Occupy movements, we have witnessed the solidarity between North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Australia. Every time our Occupying families are raided or attacked by brutal police force, we show little to no solidarity between ourselves. As such, this march will be dedicated to demonstrate the solidarity and strength that we hold dear. We now live in a world where we hold human rights to a very high regard, no matter the nationality.

The world has seen us suffer so much as we have seen them become martyrs for the political agenda they try to overthrow. On February 27th, 2012, the march will begin at the original Occupy camps and march towards the Capitol buildings in each state, town, or county. Once arriving at the destination, we will have a candlelight vigil to show solidarity. If you cannot keep a candle lit due to weather restrictions, you can use your cell phone lights, lighters and/or flash lights as a source of light.

This march is to show worldwide solidarity with all Occupations including the Occupations people rarely speak of. Let us make this a special march. And as always, solidarity with our brothers and sisters all around the world.

Official Occupy Sydney website insults Occupiers

The official Occupy Sydney website at http://www.occupysydney.org.au/2012/02/02/occupy-sydney-evicted-from-martin-place-on-its-111th-day-of-occupation-media-release-press-conference-information/ takes another malicious dig at the occupation that site has curiously never recognised existed. If you bother to check the site out the sole reference to Martin Place is a dismissive "Info Desk" in the contacts section. And now the site announces that the occupation it has never recognised existed has in fact been evicted -which it has not.

The Occupy Sydney Occupation still very much exists despite the continued efforts of the official site to undermine our existence. We don't know why. Nor do we really care about their motivations. In truth, NSW Police merely continue their illegal agenda of coming to thieve our property, without receipts, without regard for their own processes. That is all.

To be continually undermined by this website has been an ongoing hindrance to the occupation and I will call at Wednesdays GA for its permanent disendorsement, unless it is placed under the control of completely new people. We occupiers do not need a site which helps police undermine our occupation

Proposed Stop Serco Action March 9th - 12th

OccupyPerth and other Occupy groups around Australia and New Zealand have started a campaign against Serco's profiteering off secretive private contracts to provide essential public services. To launch this campaign in Perth we holding an action on March 9, with the support of affected local unions, the Deaths in Custody action group, the Refugee Rights Action Network and Serco Watch. The action will take place outside the Serco office in Perth CBD.

Since Serco are an internationally active company, Occupy Perth would like to propose Occupy Sydney get involved and launch a similar campaign of your own. This group, Serco, is after all one of the biggest, shadiest corporations on the globe and they make most of their profits directly from the tax payer.

On March 9 the OccupyPerth will be collecting signatures for letters to various Government ministers (for one example, see the attached letter to our Health Minister).

We will also be handing out Serco-related leaflets with a request and information on how to "Call your minister" on the following monday, March 12th. These leaflets should give some certified facts and a basic run-down on what to say. We encourage all individual pressure groups involved, as well as other Occupy groups to create their own equivalent flyers and leaflets, reflecting their own local issues with Serco and the relevant local ministers to call. Occupy Perth will cover the general issue of keeping essential Public infrastructure out of profiteering private hands.

We currently have 3 main unifying points for our campaigning around Serco:

1) Keep essential public services in public hands (end privatisation).
2) Full public disclosure on Public-Private bidding processes and public auditing of all Serco contracts.
3) Prevent future profiteering from human misery.

There is just over a month of time to plan, so we would like to test our limits and try make this a well co-ordinated, public campaign. Would be absolutely delighted to have you on board and would especially appreciate any outreach you can do to other anti-Serco groups in your area (I suspect several unions would be in similar positions to ours, in regards to Serco).

Occupy Sydney Newsletter out soon

A weekly Occupy Sydney newsletter is being published Sundays via email, mondays at http://occupysydneynews.blogspot.com (a Weekly Newspaper) Out Sundays.

A daily email will also be built incorporating a daily roundup from all the Occupy Sydney Projects & Working Groups, and notifying all pending proposals.

The aim of the email newsletter is for it to become the the vehicle for all working groups and the GA to keep Occupy Sydney people updated on activities actions and anticipated acts of change. One email a week suits a lot of people more than a multiplicity.
The newsletter may publish daily, or Tuesdays Thursdays & Sundays (post GA) if consensus can be raeached on this model

The Occupy Sydney Research Working Group is calling for individuals or self-organised teams to produce fact reports on various issues of interest to Occupy Sydney. These reports will be used to produce educational materials that will be kept and distributed at the occupy site and published online.

Issues of interest at this stage include, but will not be limited to (‘*’ indicates priorities):

Personal debt*
Mortgage debt*
Housing foreclosures*
Housing affordability*
Conditions for studying while on welfare*
Homelessness
Business debt
Sovereign debt
Food affordability
Wealth and poverty distribution in Sydney
Fractional banking
Superannuation

For the fact report we will need you to provide a .doc (word document) containing:

1 A4 page of writing that reports on the issue
A series of bullet pointed facts relevant to the issue
Any relevant graphs, charts or images referenced to the original source
Any additional information is welcome but should be submitted in an appendix

All facts will need to be clearly referenced to the most reliable, primary sources possible, i.e. not newspaper articles but the sources that an article might use, not media surveys but government, institutional, or academic reports etc.

: Occupy Frankfurt - The Kitchen

Walking up to Occupy Frankfurt the first thing that somebody realises is the village-like formations and clear boundaries between the occupiers’ guilds. This camp has been given official license by the local government and has existed for 89 days without eviction. In this time and without the external threat by police, the occupiers have increasingly defined and distinguished themselves through their working groups. This has led to some sectarian bickering over preferencial organisation of dwindling resources. However the battle for preferences is always an unusual battle for second place. All groups agree on one point, the kitchen always comes first.

The camp is based in front of the European Central Bank building and the tents surround a ground-lit statue to the ECB. The canteen of the kitchen tent is situated on top of two of the ground lights which have now been switched off, but would have been darkened anyway from the mud and dirt that follows hungry occupiers rushing boots. Being underneath the giant sign, the people’s kitchen has an ironic official icon that advertises the autonomous free food for miles around. (Think following one of the glowing “golden arches” to locate an anarchist bomb-making meeting!)

The kitchen has been manned by two permanent chefs, Luke from Canada and Jay from the US/Germany, since day one. It is immediately clear that this consistency has allowed for a productivity rarely found in the working groups with more fluid membership. The floors of the kitchen and canteen area have been constructed by nailing smooth planks of timber on top of wooden crates and it is as flat, dry and stable as a local restaurant. The storage areas are always clean and ordered like a supermarket with older food at the front so that it is used and not wasted. Apart from the constant threat of a Daphne du Maurier inspired pigeon assault, the tent is a space of calm professional egalitarian construction that unites all it serves.

The kitchen is supported by donations of fresh food collected from supermarkets by a local charity organisation, and a constant supply of bread brought in on the backs of individuals and organised groups. Bread seems to be the staple diet of this occupation. In George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia the Spanish workers’ militias threw away excess bread while the people in the towns suffered crippling shortages. In a funny twist of the times, the excess bread supplies of Frankfurt guarantee none of the resisters in Occupy ever go hungry. The amount of food available that would otherwise have been thrown out forces someone to question why anyone should ever be allowed to go hungry. It also flies in the face of the demand and supply justification of current increases in the price of food world wide.

The gas stoves in the middle of the kitchen burn constantly warming litres of freshly made vegan soups. Every meal seems to be inspired by the pyramid on the back of cereal boxes which dictate 6-8 serves of fruit and vegetables a day. For a meat eater the daily egg salads provide some brief relief. There is a threat that the diminishing level of monetary donations will bring an end to the supply of coffee, margarine, cheese and milk, however the current supply of green stuffs alone will last for a month at least.

Anyone who asks what can the Occupy movement possibly achieve should see the kitchen at Occupy Frankfurt. Rather than a patronising charity hand-out van, the people working and the people eating are from the same community. The homeless and the students and the workers and the actors stand around eating together. Luke and Jay work 24 hours a day for the love and collective celebration of creative cooking. No one complains and all plates are finished. Within our current social dilemmas and the constant outcry about the conspiracy of governments failing to limit the increases in the price of living, this sort of community organising is a bubble of progressive productivity. If kitchens such as this could be established in all local communities and neighbourhoods the need for charities and frustrating middle-class guilt would be dramatically weakened.

In light of the many divisions between groups within this occupied village, one thing is certain: Everyone loves the kitchen tent!

The Occupiers at Martin Place believe that NSW Police attempts to destabilise Occupy Sydney & supporters over the last two days has a twofold purpose. Police want to minimise Occupy Sydney 's ability to articulate our anti-Corporate Greed message to the patrons of The Sydney Festival .NSW Police also would like to shut Occupy Sydney down fearing that a Court case in 4 days time could clearly define legal issues,as sought by Occupy Sydney participants, and prevent Police abuse of law .

What Police have done:

Seized Personal items without issuing receipts.
Seized A custom built kitchen trolley.We understand its been destroyed.
Arbitrarily deemed seized property to be rubbish & destroyed it, despite being given owners details.
Seized computers , banners, pamphlets & posters-most probably destroyed.
Seized all supplies for making banners placards & protest information.
Harassed and Threatened Occupy Sydney participants & supporters.
Attempted to and enforced orders while refusing to identify which laws are being breached.
Wilfully misinterpreted a clear Regulation to include actions clearly outside that legal framework. (Court case 10/1/12 seeks definitions.
Refused to expedite return of property and in fact manufactured a series of convoluted series of obstructions to securing return.
Threatened a new fellow Occupier Group ,Occupy Sydney International, compelling occupiers to close occupation due to fear of police violence.
Sought to dictate how Occupy Sydney should protest .No legal framework specified.If we consent and the only means they leave are demonstrably ineffective then we should not consent.
Taken essential Free School Protest equipment
Taken essential library books.
Seized all Occupy Sydney tarps used for protecting protest equipment from inclement weather.

All Occupiers should know that there is a very real and clear danger of violence from Police & violation of personal or protest rights at any time at Occupy Sydney. NSW Police may steal your property. They may give orders which have no basis in law. Where the aims of police are not supported by law or the people ,the people should NOT support police.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Call Rocks Police. Order them to cease & desist from attacking the #OccupySydney peaceful protest.
Bring all unwanted furniture to Occupy Sydney.
Bring all books,fiction and non fiction to #Occupysydney

Occupy Sydney invites individuals, families and inviting community groups to join us for a festival at Martin Place on 10 December – the Global Day of Action and Global Human Rights Day.

This family friendly festival will feature music, workshops, open mic, speakers and participation from a variety of community groups and associations in Sydney talking about global human rights and social justice issues.

The Festival will be held between 2pm and 6pm. The event is family friendly and all are welcome.

What has been so positive about Occupy Sydney is that it is an alternative space where diverse communities and individuals can come together to discuss ideas, issues and current struggles with the public in a public place.

The 10 December Festival will provide a positive opportunity for communities, families and individuals to connect with people in Sydney, and engage, discuss and share information about global injustice and human rights in a friendly, family orientated atmosphere.

On 15th October 2011, thousands of people from across Sydney converged
on Martin Place to challenge our current economic and political system
and to build a movement for meaningful democracy and social justice. And
we’re still here!
Since the occupation began police have arrested 59 people in attempts to
shut down the activities of Occupy Sydney. Many of these charges have
come about because of police persecution, harassment and the use of
force.

Sunday 20th Nov 2011: Occupy Sydney is just over a month old and a small group of occupiers cling tenaciously to our right to occupy Martin Place peacefully and respectfully in the face of open police management hostility. That hostility is not at all a reflection of the public attitude to occupiers and the occupation generally as a broad swathe of the Australian public from left to right stop by to urge our occupiers to keep doing what we are doing. Heartening stuff. Even individual police officers are now openly stating that they would rather not be harassing us -and we understand that orders are orders. Current police orders seem to come from the same Assistant Commissioner who ordered the infamous Oct 23 attack on our previous occupation.
NSW Police spent must have spent a Macquarie Bankers annual bonus & salary combined on intimidation and harassment of peaceful occupiers at Martin Pl. We will not be intimidated and we will not resile from our duty to ensure that the Occupy Sydney conversation continues 24 hours a day 7 days a week in Martin Place.. as well as online.
The last forty eight hours have seen NSW Police resolve to destabilise the occupation weaken drastically as truth and commonsense push aside the dogma subscribed to by NSW Police that the law is what they make it. It may be a lull in what some describe as psychological warfare by Police or the beginning of a better understanding. The only relationship Occupy Sydney occupiers seek with police is that they revert to being servants of, not dictators to, the people.

On the international day of remembrance and reflection, Armistice Day, the Australian government will announce that US marines will be permanently based on Australian soil to help expand US military control within this region. When will politicians learn that increasing troop numbers increases the chances of conflict? Perhaps if our leaders fought in the wars, they would not be so blasé about rushing into them. Peoples Rights vs NSW Police

Occupy Sydney have planned a March for Saturday Nov 5^th. An associated person has as an act of good faith filed a “notice of protest” (form1) with NSW Police. NSW Police have proposed several onerous variations to the protest notice which in will render the protest ineffective. When Occupy Sydney offered to negotiate with police at a full General Assembly of the movement NSW Police refused, instead preferring to issue Supreme Court proceedings for an injunction to prevent the November 5th Rally and March.

Rally to Support Peoples Right to Protest at a time and public place of the peoples choice.

Occupy Advocates worldwide should consider and be prepared for pro Corporate Police commands to order that police officers deploy Tear Gas against our peaceful convergences for change. As demonstrated in Oakland Melbourne Sydney San Diego and other jurisdictions, many police commands consider that their executive authority extends to crushing peaceful dissent.

As a peaceful movement for change, while we do not advocate violent protest we DO NOT SAY that we should passively accept violence initiated by the State or others against us. Today @occupysydney proactivist wing start lobbying the in support of struggling small business operators in the Sydney CBD. Businesses which are hurting from falling retail spending as people find they have less disposable income. One landlord is trying to increase rents by 30% plus CPI - and many will be shocked when we reveal this entitys name tomorrow...

Was NSW Police attack on Occupy Sydney lawful?

At about 5am Oct 23 I doing the allocated the task of police liaison person at The Occupy Sydney site in Martin Place. Most camp occupiers were sleeping. There were about six to eight occupiers awake and there were also at least two visitors A person who was part of the occupier group suddenly came running over to the camp yelling " quick Police.Get the video cameras out. Immediately a large contingent of police appeared moving quickly from the direction of Hyde Park to my right.They formed a line about ten metres distant to the Occupy Area Eastern perimeter. A senior officer with a loud hailer summarily announced (to the effect) "you are in breach of (legislation name, offence: illegal camping) & have ten minutes to gather your posessions and move away." I walked directly to the senior officer making the announcement and was the closest non-police party to him.At no stage did the officer offer any peaceful solution nor did he allow a reasonable or humanly possible timeframe in which to comply with his "orders". The amount of property needing to be removed would have required at least an hour to collect and remove.From the end of the police officers announcement a period of only about 5 minutes expired before police attacked without warning. Several people including women were punched while held by multiple police officers. People were screaming in obvious pain as police visibly and roughly applied excessive force in wristlocks and other holds.

Police knowingly issued orders which Occupy Sydney protesters could not comply with while ensuring the safety security of our posessions. Is it legal for police to issue directives with which people cannot reasonably comply, then act to enforce them?
People have the right to act to protect property from a clear and imminent threat even when that threat is as a result of imminent actions by police. We believe that Occupy Sydney people arrested and charged including with incitement had the right to protect their property.
Police enforcement of the City if Sydney camping regulations a pretext to deploy unreasonable force.
NSW Police ignored Homeless Protocol to which they are signatory in evicting Occupy Sydney.Basic common law principle is that a law applying to any group applies to all/
Police did not act on a single complaint including from Council or Banks.

NSW Police eviction of Occupy Sydney Protest amounts to draconian illegal and possibly corrupt use of Police powers.

What can we do??

Bus:: Take Circular Quay bus to Martin Pl and walk uphill (max 10 minutes)·

A designated Safe Area in the centre of the square will be reserved for those with children. Parents/ carers are responsible for all in their care.

Parking is at a premium & expensive in the area. Please use public transport if you can.

The people of Sydney will be running a Speakers Forum, there will be General Assemblies based on the Occupy Wall St model, we will be running Workshops where we can have broad discussions on politics, education, equality, the environment, and other Working Groups that will facilitate media, logistics, food, equipment, etc.

2. Post any talents or interests you have that may be needed and of use.

5. Do NOT depend on major media outlets. They’re already blocking us, presenting misinformation or not sharing information at all.
