Occupy Sydney Farmers Defence Update

An 8am meeting today near Deniliquin was attended by 16 local Farmers Farm dependent business people and workers- oh, and about 30 noisy happy country kids. The local group will be co-ordinated via Grizz and is preparing to respond at short notice to calls from Farmers NSW wide as well as in Victoria to intervene in Bank or Financial Institution Foreclosures of Independent Owner operated Farm properties.

 Two ex Farmers present have already been evicted at the behest of Banks and strongly urged everyone to get behind this initiative. Amusingly, there was some initial suspicion that we were aligned with the National Farmers Federation , effectively a Liberal National bulldog organisation infamous for helping Peter Reith and Patricks in the Waterfront dispute late last Century.

 There were also tentative discussions relating to circumventing the current buyers cartels affecting most farm products.

  Further relationships between this Farmers Defence Unit and Occupy Sydney will be explored at both ends.

 The group is ready with people and resources to respond to the potential Foreclosure eviction near Walgett.

Activists arrested while trying to make contact with refugees in Wickham Point- Occupy Sydney offer full solidarity

Seven people from several Australian cities were arrested by Northern Territory police for trying to make contact with refugees inside the Wickham Point Detention Centre outside Darwin.

They were out at the remote site to show support to the 500 people locked up there for legally seeking asylum in Australia. The protest occurred the day after a refugee inside Wickham Point tried to commit suicide.

“This protest was meant to be a message to the Australian public and politicians that people are prepared to come out in these 40 degree conditions, and are prepared to challenge the police that defend a detention centre that locks up innocent people,” Jay Fletcher, spokesperson for the Easter refugee convergence said.

“Wickham Point is Australia’s newest and biggest detention centre, the government has built it to lock up 1500 people. But this site is considered ‘unfit for human habitation’ and locking up people in the middle of nowhere so no one can see them and help them.

“This system kills people, it has been killing people for 20 years.”

Police and private security had blocked the entrance to the centre when about 35 refugee supporters arrived. Last Thursday, representatives from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and private detention contractor Serco banned four refugee advocates from officially visiting the asylum seekers inside.

Mark Goudkamp, among the seven arrested, said: “The ‘approved site’ for our protest at Wickham Point was out of earshot and out of sight from the people we’d travelled across the country to support. Our simple attempt to reach an elevated point where we could interact with the asylum seekers, albeit still from a long distance, is clearly not what DIAC, Serco or the police want us to do.”

Year of the Farmer : another Farmer faces Foreclosure by NAB

Wheat Growers & Farmers are under constant
threat from Bankers acting as loan sharks.

  A 100 year plus salt of the earth Farming family headed by a determined brother and sister team face imminent foreclosure by a callous uncaring National Australia Bank. The property, a substantial diversified mixed farm, produces beef, cotton and wheat . The family were forced to take on substantial debt by a ten year drought unprecedented in Australia's recent history. National Australia Bank took  full advantage of this declared Natural Disaster to leverage a bank interest rate of 18%. This dedicated farming duo , acting with a resilience perhaps only generational farming families understand set a recovery plan in motion   A catastrophic flood followed this drought period wiping out a five million dollar wheat crop nearly ready for harvest.

 Following the floods the brother and sister partnership sought to address their financial position by seeking a partnership. An innovative plan to partner with local asset poor, high unemployment aboriginal communities with support from Federal Government Dept DEWR is currently on the table with a decision due by the end of the month. But National Australia Bank, in a typical bankers act of bastardry, refuse to wait that long.. They may foreclose as soon as April 12th. This same bank and account manager lacked the common civility and humanity to extend this duo the common courtesy of deferring a Sydney court case so they could attend the hospital bedside of their dying father.

  Why does the NAB want to foreclose ?? There could be many reasons, but with dual river frontages and water rights in an area where water is king, could it be that NAB want to disposess this family because the water is so valuable??

  According to Federal MP Bob Katter up to four farmers a week are driven to suicide by the pressures of modern day farming. Most of those pressures are brought about by "sound financial advice" -in reality little more than bankers marketing spin of callously calculated products.

  The time has come for the community at large to say NO to a banker controlled society. Today its these two farmers in comparative isolation some 660 kilometres from Sydney. Tomorrow it could be you.We can and must, with your help, change NAB's decision -and change the laws which protect the banks from the people. Who will come with me to help these people if needed? How else can you help?

The National Australia Bank is so adept at managing spin and foreclosures that we wonder if its real business is banking or constructing deceptive marketing strategies which inevitably result in the borrowers

 Affordability is at the root of the Occupy Sydney message and Occupy Sydney occupy in the seventh least affordable City in the World. The City of Sydney orchestrated "Homeless count" fudges the numbers of homeless in the Sydney City area. The count is done over a two hour period (midnight to 2am) and only in public spaces. Many homeless people choose to sleep in the day -its safer,especially for the elderly. Missing from this statistic are the many homeless who sleep on private property, or the numerous long term homeless who sleep on the City Rail System.

 The "solutions" pro-offered by the government marginalisation industry are often "Jail you pay for". For example the Tony Mundine Hostels charge students a whopping $168 per week, leaving them a mere $80 per fortnight from their Centrelink allowances to pay for transport clothes and essentials. Hostels such as Matthew Talbot (Vinnies) and Foster House (Salvos) impose draconian rules extra to a tenancy and charge hefty rents while denying that a tenancy exists -in order to ursurp homeless peoples rights in exchange for a roof and a bed.

   Current NSW Social Housing policy enables the gentrification of some suburbs and the ghettofication of others . A distardly scheme where conveniently located inner City properties of the proportions needed to accommodate larger families or suitable for extended family living are being privatised ( sold on 99 year leases) with no known comparable replacements being built or bought anywhere in Sydney City.  Housing NSW waiting lists exceed 10000 approved applications on awaiting list which seems to move with glacial pace. there are clearly insufficient houses to accommodate all seekers.Yet Sydney City Housing is being sold and not replaced in locations such as Millers Point. 

  Housing NSW further exacerbate the high cost of rental accommodation by not only being Australia's largest landlord, but also Australia's largest tenant of residential property. By leasing private property to fulfil some social housing rental responsibilities Housing NSW who pay by configuration rather than quality, enable slum and low end landlords to charge above market rents for properties relative to the respective area. This has the effect of lifting the private rental cost of lower end properties in cheaper areas adding to unaffordability.

   Missing completely from the basket of non-solutions pro-offered by Federal State and Local government is Affordable Home Ownership -current models have social housing being controlled by the State often under the management of one of the plethora of parasitic agencies. For clients there are more obligations than a standard rental agreement and zero opportunity of ownership. Ownership and therefore control defines a home. For many less than ownership is merely an enslavement handcuff full of recurring obligations and responsibilities -jail you pay for.

We ask that you boycott these Unilever brands:

 Unilever in Pakistan is continuously taking anti-worker measures and ignoring the law in order to increase its exploitation of the workers increase its rate of profit as much as possible. Court orders and decisions are being crushed under the boots while national and international labour laws are being violated openly. The workers who produced the net profit of 46.6% this year for the multinational are now being squeezed 

More than 700 contract workers are currently working in Unilever RYK. Some of them have been working for more than 30 years now while the minimum time span of service among them is 5 years. These workers are now raising the demand of permanent jobs as per naThese 700 contracts workers are being treated as slaves in the factory. They are not given legal leave. They cannot use mobile phones while at work. They are given substandard food separate from the permanent employees. These miserable conditions forced these contract workers to register the Inqilabi Workers Union (Revolutionary Workers’ Union) on a legal basis after which Unilever management started taking revengeful actions against them.

In order to highlight their demands and condemn the reprisal attacks against the contract workers, a peaceful sit down strike was organized by the union in front of factory gate on October 26^th 2011. The strike was called off after several assurances by the management. Contrary to the promises of management, the entry of 300 workers was banned illegally the very next day. Entry of these workers has been banned for more than four months now, which is a clear violation of court orders. These workers have been protesting during all these months but the management is continuing in its bigotry and its egoistic behaviour which is only worsening the lives of hundreds of workers and their families.

After the peaceful protest of workers on 26^th October 2011 in Rahim Yar Khan, workers at Walls Lahore won a victory by closing the factory gate where 300 workers were given permanent jobs afterwards. Similarly at Best Foods Lahore workers forcefully closed the factory gate for 14 days and 205 workers were made permanent afterwards. In Rahim Yar Khan, however, 300 workers were sacked after a peaceful protest of just a single day. This shows that working class can only get their rights through struggles on a class basis as the capitalists and multinationals know no other language but force... (more original article)tional and international laws. 6 a.m meeting decided NOT to reoccupy at this stage as current occupiers seem to be trying to go 24-7. We have sufficient equipment and new literature ready to print. We will support the current "occupation" in principle if they choose to,but not on the ground. We do not agree with their presentation to the extent that we will not associate with it. In addition current occupiers discarded much of the equipment (which they deemed rubbish) such as heavy duty tarps needed to secure a permanent occupation. We are on standby and now willing and able to deploy a 24-7 occupation with 24 hours notice- at Elizabeth St site.

  An autonomous group including people well known within Occupy Sydney and some fresh blood are planning a 24 / 7 re occupation at the abandoned Elizabeth St site which served us so well for so long. 
  
  As a direct response to the police raid on Occupy Sydney this (Friday) morning , and the subsequent abandonment of the occupation , and the subsequent failure of an emergency General Assembly called at 9am at the Downing Centre to convene or properly conduct business (due to Lilys Court matter) this autonomous call is for an Occupy Sydney General Assembly to convene on Wednesday 6pm at the Martin Place and Elizabeth St site with the intention of re-establishing a twenty four hour, seven day a week occupation at that site. Intending occupiers please bring sleeping bags.  

  We envisage that the occupation will not seek confrontation, rather focussing on delivering the core message "We want change", listening to and including the public in a necessary discussion. Much of the equipment necessary to rebuild the occupation is no longer in our possession so we will be seeking logistical support supplies of the following are required.

• Pamphlets Posters & Printed Matter.
• Banners Paints & Banner Making Materials
• Top-Display Units - max height about 500-600mm. 
• Heavy Duty Tarps- Plastic Banner material Type especially welcome.
• Corflute - for signage.

Another Police Raid on Occupy Sydney this Morning

  Occupy Sydney have called an emergency General Assembly outside the Downing Centre this morning following a dawn raid by NSW POLICE. A recent acquisition, an outsized box on wheels, has been declared property no grata and removed by occupiers from site. Police also removed property using a City of Sydney council truck to do so.
There were no arrests.
Complaints about the site are known to have been accumulating since last friday, when the current occupier group chose to relocate abandoning essential infrastructure (said to be have generated a council complaint). 
 All occupy supporters are urged to attend an emergency General Assembly at 9am at the Downing Centre (cnr Elizabeth & Liverpool Sts) immediately preceding Lilys Court case.

Lily Nancy Hatten is one of Occupy Sydney's youngest, and she has been one of the most enduring and inspiring presences at Martin Place since October last year. Hatten has her hearing for a 'staying overnight' charge from the Occupy Sydney big eviction on February 2. This is Occupy Sydney's first hearing on 'staying overnight' and thus it is a very important test case in the same vein as Lance Priestly's 'camping' case on January 10.

Hatten has secured pro-bono representation by high-profile barrister Charles Waterstreet - infamously known throughout Australia as the real life maverick lawyer and prankster identity behind the popular ABC TV series Rake. Waterstreet supports Occupy Sydney and has a special interest in women groups within the Occupy movement. Proceedings will start at 9.30am tomorrow at the Downing Centre, and it is predicted to be a very interesting, lively and possibly even entertaining hearing!
